This table is used to do regional classification in a variety of contexts at the Wikimedia Foundation. Specifically it is used in conjunction with the MaxMind IP geolocation tool to group page requests. For compatibility, we use the ISO 3166 list of countries augmented by a few region names which are sometimes returned by MaxMind.

The Regional Classifications are from the International Telecommunications Union.

The definition of Global South and Global North are taken from the 2010-15 Wikimedia strategic plan, with some reclassifications by Wikimedia Foundation staff over time (such as moving Ukraine to the Global South).

For the purposes of our discussion, the Global North includes Australia, Canada, Israel, Hong Kong, Macau, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States and all of Europe (including Russia). The Global South includes Asia (with the exception of Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan), Central America, South America, Mexico, Africa, and the Middle East (with the exception of Israel).

In certain Wikimedia documents, per this list, Global South may be used interchangeably with 'developing countries' and Global North with 'developed countries'.
